Tasty Teusday: The Kings Soup

DSC_0002

Today was a very special day. Now Queen Beatrix abdicated the throne to  Prince Willem-Alexander. He is the first King since 1890 and in order to celebrate I bring you this very special Orange soup. To celebrate the change of power in the House of Orange.

Ingredients: 500g carrots, 1 orange bell pepper, 1 orange, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 cubes of chicken stock, 1 sprig of rosemary, one spoonful of curry powder, 1 liter of water

Preparation:

  • Cut up all of your vegetables into small pieces.
  • Sauté your vegetables, the curry powder and rosemary in a hot pan with a little oil for about 5 minutes.
  • Add 1 liter of water, you chicken stock and the juice of one orange (about 200 ml) and bring it up to a boil
  • Let it boil for about 15 minutes.
  • Take a stick blender and puree your soup. Please be careful when doing this you don’t want to get boiling hot liquid all over you.

And that’s it, you made orange soup! I have to warn you though, the curry flavor might be a little overwhelming. If you want something more refreshing take out some of the curry add a little bit more orange juice and perhaps even some orange zest.

Enjoy, Wietske

6 Tips for Friendship

Inspired by this particular post I want to write about friendship.

For me friendship is probably more important than my family bonds, however it is way more fragile and not as everlasting. Here are some tips on how to get most out of your friendships.

Pay the bill: Don’t go Dutch on your friends. I don’t ever split the bill with my friends, unless we are with a large crowd. Take turns in paying the bills, it always leaves me with a special feeling. Either I treat a friend or my friends treats me to something nice while we had a good time together AND most importantly we don’t have to fight about how to split the bill to the last penny or get out our calculators because one of us had one more drink.

Give: I love giving gifts and receiving them. I love to see the excitement on my friends face and it leaves me feeling wonderful if I found or made something that brings a smile to my friends face.

Support: I try to support my friends in every decision they make, even if it might seem like a bad one. Sure I try to talk them out of really bad decisions but I don’t push. I am not their mum nor dad and there are probably enough people who told them they are wrong. Support them, and if thinks don’t go as planned at least they have learned their own lesson.

Listen: Let them whine, complain, and ramble on if they want too. Sometimes people just need to want to get things of their chest without any interruption. Let them talk, but listen! Give them advise or encouraging words when needed. Don’t just stare into space unless you want the same treatment.

Make memories: Do things, take pictures of it, and keep remembering it for the rest of your life. People you forget are often the people who you don’t share any crazy memories with. Even just a quick message that mentions a certain event can instantly refresh a slightly worn down friendship. However if you don’t have any memories in common  friendships die a slow and painful death.

Let it go: The most important tip however is although energy is needed to let a friendship exist sometimes when things just cost too much energy and you are not gaining anything positive just let it go. It is not worth it, find someone better because even though your friends are important. Your own feelings are more important. And who knows maybe the sudden stop of attention makes your friend realize what they are missing out on!

what are the things you do to keep your friendship going? Do you talk every day? have weekly meetups? tell me, I am curious since I still have a lot to learn.

Sexy Sunday: Skin Brushing?

I have been on a health kick lately, and don’t only try to watch what I eat and monitor closely what I take in I also decided that I want to put more natural stuff on my skin and my ultimate goal is to stop wearing foundation, which I guess is something I could do right now but I don’t feel comfortable with my own skin.

I’ve started with oil cleansing and I will post an update about that in a few weeks to tell you what I think about it. But while researching that I came across something new called Skin Brushing.

It is exactly what it sounds like, you brush your skin in short strokes with a natural brisle brush or mit and you work towards your heart. It does not only claim to get rid of dead skin cells, cellulite, bloatiness, and weight but also is great for detoxifiction.

Under normal circumstances the skin eliminates more than one pound of waste products every day. If the skin becomes inactive with its pores clogged with millions of dead cells and other debris, toxins will remain in the body. This puts undue stress on the other eliminative organs, mainly the kidneys and liver, making them increase their activity. Eventually they become overworked.

However there are also a lot of sceptics like Dr. Jacob cautioned that avid dry brushers put their skin at risk for inflammation, redness and an eczema-like itchy rash. (source)

Nevertheless I am still very curious to see if this works, even if it doesn’t reduce celulite, weight or toxins if it makes my skin look and feel better that would be good enough for me.  I am going to try this for 2 weeks and I will give you update on how it turns out.

Here is an how to brush:

To brush the skin, use long gentle, but firm, strokes

  • Start at the feet and legs brushing upwards to your groin.
  • Then do your hands and go up your arms to the armpits.
  • Then brush upwards on your buttocks.
  • Brush down the neck, chest and trunk.
  • Brush your lower abdomen towards the center.
  • It is permissible to brush across the top of the shoulders and upper back as the best contact with the skin is made that way.
  • Do not brush your face.
  • Brush the breasts very lightly, avoiding the nipples. (source)

Have you ever heard or tried dry skin brushing? Or do you have other natural skin care solutions you swear by?

Hello my name is Kang Seungmi.

I have told you my real name before, Wietske. However I have another name that I frequently use. Kang Seungmi. Kang Seungmi is my Korean name, if you have watched the video above you will know how I got that name. Now I will tell you how I got my last name.

My Korean last name is a whole other story and I only obtained it 2 months after I got my first name. I never imagined having a Korean first name, let alone a last name. I love my Dutch name, it’s unique and I think it truly reflects on who I am. I never wanted a Korean name, and I put up with all the butchering of my name because I would never ever ask someone to give me a Korean one.

Then my Korean name was given to me and I used it on a daily basis, if people couldn’t remember my name I told them just to call me Seungmi and that’s that. I didn’t even think about adding a last name.

Then on the day one of my best friends flew back to the Netherlands something interesting happened. She really didn’t want to leave, and rather leave with me. I would be flying back a week later and totally understood how she felt.

She cried and told me I should also leave that day, to ease her pain. Although I did want to ease the pain leaving Korea is something I hate and I would never ever think about leaving early. She knows that too, told me it was okay and then she fetched the freshly printed ticket from the machine. However she did not get one but 2 tickets. Someone must have forgotten her ticket, a person called Seungmi, Kang Seungmi.

And from that very day onwards I was not just Seungmi, I was Kang Seungmi. Me and my friends still laugh about this and she still complains that I should have left that day with her. She had my ticket so why did I stay!

Tell me, do you guys have a Korean name? tell me what it is and how you got it, I would love to hear some more interesting stories!

Photo Friday: Valencia

227216_10150223502487246_624587245_8459517_4754013_nMy trip to Valencia must have been one of my favorite holidays. I never saw myself going to Spain ever but then a friend dragged me along as a cover up so she could meet her boyfriend. I met great people, spend a day with a Spanish family, drove through the streets of a very empty city while blasting loud music and during the day I saw the absolute top of modern-day architecture.

226567_10150223510382246_624587245_8459648_1404417_nI was introduced to the absolute best of Spanish cuisine. Fresh seafood, snails, liquor but above all the deserts that taste even better than they looked.

224293_10150223501037246_624587245_8459494_411786_nBut what I liked most about this trip is how close I became with my friend. We laughed together, cried, had awesome adventures and intense midnight conversations that changed our friendship – in a good way forever. Valencia, is defiantly a city that hold a lot of good memories!

Have you ever been to Valencia?

Throwback Thursday: Super Junior – Twins (Knock Out)

Even though I am not an ELF and I don’t know the members names by heart, super junior always has a special place in my heart. In particular this song has been one of the first songs that introduced me to the wonderful world of K-pop. The style is so far away from my current music genre that I like most and even back then I listened to a totally different genre.

However I was intrigued, I was never really into the whole boy band movement, I hardly know any back street boys or N*sync songs. However this band, there were so many member, and all the clothes matched and they danced in perfectly synchronized and then, is that a boy or a girl?!?

I was amazed, curious, clicked on other videos showing in the suggested video bar in youtube. I put up with the bad quality but I found the most amazing artists, not a lot yet. K-pop on youtube was hardly existing, heck youtube was still a little baby, a place for people to post their funny vidoes not HD music videos.  But it was a start that led into all of this, my entire life changed because of this one song. If I wasn’t that intrigued back then I wouldn’t be here right now.

Tasty Teusday: Pie of fail.

DSC_0010

I had an utterly amazing idea for this weeks Tasty Teusday. However, once again I’ve proven that I am not good at baking – at all.  I wanted to make a choco pie. But in cake form. For those who don’t know what a choco pie is, it is a popular Korean snack of a cake with marshmallows in the centre and covered in chocolate and it’s just perfect.

Unfortunately they don’t sell them in the Netherlands, so I thought to myself, why not make a choco pie cake! Basically one ginourmous chocopie. Well, my dream didn’t come true.

DSC_0003-001DSC_0007

For he actually cake I wanted to make a vanilla chiffon cake since the light texture and light vanilla flavor wouldn’t overpower the chocolate and marshmallow flavors. First of all my cake was one deflated mess. In order to try to save it I cut it into squares so I could stack it. Then I tried to make the marshmallow filling by trying to melt marshmallows using a double boiler but it was just too sticky to work with so I tried melting the marshmallows in the microwave but it just didn’t work.

And that’s where I gave up. So no tasty looking cake. Just a big mess I had to clean up and food I had to throw out.

No more baking for me, at least for a while.

Can you bake? If so, what is your favorite thing to make?

Motivational Monday: It’s okay to start over.

As you might have noticed I have been MIA for about a week, I have been stressing out about my application for Hanyang University while working 38 hours this week. I didn’t schedule posts I thought I scheduled but did I think about giving up? Remember my goals for this year? One of them is, posting a post every single day till at least the end of this year. And I might have failed, it doesn’t mean I can’t start over.

Every day is a new day, everyday you can take the opportunity to start anew. Don’t wait for special days. Don’t wait for the January first, don’t wait for Mondays, or Sundays, or the weekend. Just do it!

I don’t know I somehow have the tendency to sound like a Nike Commercial but really I cannot stress enough that if you want to accomplish something, anything all you have to do is start. Start anytime, any day you want and continue. If you feel one day, start again the next. Continue with this process long enough and eventually you will accomplish your goals.

So here I am, back for a new round.

Motivational Monday: I need your help!

As you may or may not know I am currently in the process of applying for the division of international relations at Hanyang University in Seoul, South-Korea. I have finally accumulated all the papers I need but there is one more thing (or actually 2) that needs to be done and that is writing a personal statement and a study plan.

I have never done neither of those. To get accepted into a Dutch university all you have to do is apply and you get accepted (if you have the right level, which I have) to writing a personal statement and trying to sell myself is something completely new. So that’s where I need your help. I have written draft after draft for my personal statement and quickly wrote down a study plan (Still not completely sure what that is though) and I would really really appreciate it if you could read it and give me advice on how to improve it.

So here you go, excuse my terrible writing!

For as long as I can remember I have been interested in global issues. Why countries make certain decisions and how history and culture influence the way countries interact.

I read the entire encyclopedia  to absorb as much information about different cultures and from primary school all the way through my high school career I thoroughly enjoyed world history and the globalization aspect of geography.

I also took all the language courses my school offered including the extra Spanish and Chinese language and culture courses to enable myself to get to know these cultures even more in-depth.

However it wasn’t until I went on youth exchange program to Mongolia where I realized that besides learning about new cultures, I enjoyed it even more to share my thoughts with people from all over the world about current affairs and how politics and history influence the current and future situation different countries.

After high school I studied at Leiden university in the Netherlands as a Koreastudies major for 2 years and that’s where I realized that I have a passion for the situation in North-Korea and vocalizing that North-Korea is just a small part of the problem and that many other nations are involved but in order to be able to understand a nation you have to understand the world.

I want to understand how nations and societies deal with the threats and why they react in a certain way. How peace organizations NGO’s and organizations such as the UN make decisions and one day I would like to become a key figure into giving people insight in the situation that hopefully leads to better understanding and perhaps peace with North-Korea.

I think becoming a student at the division of international studies at Hanyang university would enable me to expand my ability to think critically and analyze global problems so I can educate people about current affairs.

I would make a good student because I already have an extensive knowledge of European and Korean history, the Korean language and I am interested in global affairs.

Study Plan

During my undergraduate period at the division of international studies I would like to educate myself how nations and societies think, what drives them and how they interact. I would like to meet people with similar interested so we can share our opinions and learn from each other. And work my way towards taking the graduate courses towards the political science and law track after which I either want to work for an organisation such as the UN or as a professor to educate people about cultural understanding.

Sexy Sunday: Let’s Jump!

DSC_0024

So since I now have a motivational Monday I want to put my more motivational and mind related posts to Mondays and my body, health and appearance related posts to Sundays. So here you go. I recently read an article (which I cannot find again) about a girl loosing 20 pounds by eating healthy and skipping rope! Guess what I have laying around, and guess what I want to loose. Yes that’s right, I am trying to loose weight and just live healthier.

A few month ago I was actually on quite a health kick and I lost 5 kgs by just eating healthier however lately I’ve been stressed and tired and which resulted in me eating all the chocolates, and all the cookies and basically just everything! Another reason why I want to start is because I basically ripped my pants yesterday. And they were my favorite!

So starting from today I will eat as healthy as possible, I will keep a food diary.  And I will start skipping rope for 30 minutes a day.

And no this is not a diet, I want to live healthier I won’t say no to candies completely because it’s okay to have some bad things, as long as I don’t eat the entire bag!

Tell me, are you currently on a diet? or do you have any tips for me to stay away from the candies?

Love, Wietske
